José Baselga Fellowship for Clinician Scientists

The José Baselga Fellowship for Clinician Scientists was created by ESMO to support early-career physicians pursuing a clinician-scientist pathway in translational oncology. Named in memory of Dr. José Baselga, this 3-year fellowship provides protected research time, mentorship, and financial support to encourage impactful cancer research while fostering professional growth.

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

Be an ESMO member
Be under 40 years old at the time of application (one-year extension per child for parental leave)
Be board-certified medical, surgical, or radiation oncologists with at least one year of post-certification experience
Be actively engaged in clinical oncology practice or cancer research
Conduct the fellowship at a European institution, dedicating at least 50% of working time to a research project

Funding:

EUR 200,000 total over 3 years to supplement the fellow’s salary
Free registration to the ESMO Annual Congress and relevant ESMO meetings
Sponsored by AstraZeneca

Mentorship:

Each fellow will be matched with an ESMO Faculty mentor
Meetings must occur at least every two months
Fellows will also have opportunities to interact with AstraZeneca scientists

Application Requirements:

Completed online application form
CV (max 3 A4 pages, include Scopus H-index)
List of publications and presentations (max 1.5 A4 pages, no more than 5 key publications with impact statement, presentations limited to past 5 years)
Motivation letter (max 2 pages, Arial Narrow, size 11)
Recommendation letter (max 1 page) from Head of Department confirming:
- 50% protected research time
- Funding secured for the project
- Brief budget description
