A*STAR IMCB study led by Valerie Yang identified AZD5153 and Pazopanib drug combination for soft tissue sarcoma treatment

“New hope for patients with soft tissue sarcomas (STS)
A study led by Asst Prof Valerie Yang, MB BChir, PhD, Joint Research Clinician and Group Leader at A*STAR IMCB, together with collaborators from National Cancer Centre Singapore, National University of Singapore, and KYAN Technologies, has shown that a precision medicine approach can improve treatment selection for these rare and treatment-resistant cancers.
The team applied the Quadratic Phenotypic Optimisation Platform (QPOP), a data-driven phenotypic screening tool, to test patient-derived cells ex vivo. This approach accurately predicted drug responses and guided tailored treatments based on each tumour’s profile. Published in npj Precision Oncology, the study supports the use of functional screening in guiding therapy for complex cancers like STS.
QPOP identified a novel drug combination – AZD5153 and pazopanib – which showed strong efficacy across STS subtypes and provided meaningful disease control in patients with no remaining standard options. These findings highlight the potential of personalised strategies in advancing care for rare cancers.
