ASCO24 Updates: Andrea Wilson-Woods: How Blue Faery Is Changing the Fight Against Liver Cancer

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting is one of the largest and most prestigious conferences in the field of oncology. This year, the meeting took place from May 31 to June 4 in Chicago, Illinois. The event gathers oncologists, researchers, and healthcare professionals from around the world to discuss the latest advancements in cancer research, treatment, and patient care. Keynote sessions, research presentations, and panel discussions are typically part of the agenda, providing attendees with valuable insights into emerging trends and innovations in oncology.

This year, OncoDaily was at ASCO 2024 for the first time covering the meeting on-site. We had the pleasure of interviewing researchers who summarized the highlights of their work.

In this video, Andrea Wilson-Woods, the president and founder of Blue Faery, the Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association, shared insights on ‘Systemic Therapy for Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma: ASCO Guideline Update’

Hello, my name is Andrea Wilson-Woods. I am the president and founder of Blue Faery, the Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association. Blue Faery’s mission is to prevent, treat, and cure primary liver cancer, specifically hepatocellular carcinoma, also known as HCC, through research, education, and advocacy.

I founded the organization in memory of my sister, Adrienne. When I was 22 years old, I got custody of my then eight-year-old sister, Adrienne. I became her legal guardian, and I raised Adrienne all through my 20s until she was diagnosed with HCC one month after her 15th birthday.

That was in 2001, and Adrienne only lived 147 days with that diagnosis, and I was absolutely devastated because I lost my child and my sister at the same time. About a year and a half after Adrienne died, I decided to found Blue Faery because I could see that liver cancer was only going to continue to rise in the U.S. and around the world. Blue Faery has many programs for HCC patients and families.

All of them are free, and we also have an annual research award that we give out for innovative research in primary liver cancer. You can learn more at Blue Faery, that’s B-L-U-E-F-A-E-R-Y.org. And if you want to know why we’re called Blue Faery, just go to the website, BlueFaery.org.
