Michael Baumann is Chairman and Scientific Director of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and a member of the Executive Board of Heidelberg University Hospital, where he is also Professor of Radiation Oncology. He has led DKFZ since 2016, overseeing one of Germany’s largest cancer research institutions and guiding its integrated strategy across basic cancer biology, translational research, prevention, imaging, and precision oncology, in close partnership with university hospitals and national research networks.
A physician-scientist in radiation oncology, Prof. Baumann is internationally recognized for his work on tumor hypoxia, radioresistance, and individualized radiotherapy. Prior to joining DKFZ, he served as Medical Director and CEO of the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Dresden and Chair of Radiation Oncology at TU Dresden. He plays a central role in Germany’s national cancer research and care infrastructure through leadership within the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK) and has received multiple honors for advancing translational cancer research and strengthening links between research, clinical care, and national policy.
