Jasmina Veta Darkovski, Senior Physician at Universitätsklinikum Ulm, shared on LinkedIn:
“Two weeks at Gemelli University Hospital, Rome – Surgical learning, international exchange, and new perspectives in gynecologic oncology.
Over the past two weeks, I had the privilege of completing an observership with the Gynecologic Oncology team at Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS in Rome.
Being part of the team’s daily clinical and surgical activities offered valuable insights into complex surgical procedures and different approaches to the treatment of ovarian, endometrial, cervical, and vulvar cancer.
A particular focus was on primary and interval debulking surgery in ovarian cancer, including surgical planning, intraoperative decision-making, and multidisciplinary management of complex procedures and postoperative complications.
Another highlight was attending educational live surgeries in endometrial cancer, including laparoscopic and robotic approaches using the da Vinci SP system, accompanied by valuable discussions on surgical strategies, guidelines, and clinical decision-making.
Beyond the operating room, exchanging experiences with colleagues and international fellows from different healthcare systems was equally rewarding.
Despite differences in training, resources, and clinical environments, we share the same goal: improving outcomes and quality of care for women affected by gynecological cancers.
This experience reinforced my belief that progress in our field depends not only on surgical expertise and scientific evidence, but also on our willingness to challenge established approaches, embrace innovation, and learn from one another.
My sincere thanks to Professor Fagotti and the entire Gemelli team for their warm welcome, openness, and generosity in sharing their expertise.
I return to my home institution with new perspectives, renewed motivation, and valuable international connections, looking forward to future scientific exchange and collaboration.”
