CUHK Medicine Partners with Nazarbayev University to Drive Transnational Innovation and Public Health

On October 5, 2026, Professor Philip Chiu, Dean of CU Medicine, led a delegation to Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, to attend the international symposium ‘Global Medical Frontiers: Innovation, Resilience and Sharing.’ Jointly organised by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, GX Foundation, and Nazarbayev University, the event brought together nearly 20 leading medical experts from Hong Kong, Macao, and Kazakhstan to explore breakthroughs in medical technology and clinical practice, unlocking new opportunities for regional and global public health collaboration.

A major milestone of the symposium was the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between CU Medicine and Nazarbayev University School of Medicine. Establishing a strategic partnership, the two institutions will focus on key areas including global health, medical humanitarianism, clinical trial training, and diabetes care, laying a solid framework for academic research and clinical collaboration.

During the symposium, Professor Dennis Lo, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, delivered a keynote address on ‘Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing and Cancer Screening.’ Key academic leaders from CU Medicine also shared insightful perspectives across various fields, including Professor Philip Chiu, Dean of CU Medicine; Professor Justin Wu, Associate Dean (Health System); and Professor Emily Chan, Assistant Dean (External Affairs) and CEO of GX Foundation. Their speeches covered critical global topics, including digital and remote care in humanitarian settings, robotic and minimally invasive surgery, AI and medical ethics, health systems and patient care policies.

Professor Philip Chiu, Dean of CU Medicine, stated:

‘Kazakhstan serves as a vital bridge connecting East and West, acting as a crucial hub under the Belt and Road Initiative. As a top-tier university in Central Asia, Nazarbayev University is a great partner, and this alliance marks a major milestone for both institutions – as well as a strategic step forward in expanding Hong Kong’s medical research into the international Belt and Road network.

By leveraging Hong Kong’s unique strengths as an ‘International Health and Medical Innovation Hub’ and bridging them with Central Asia’s exceptional clinical and academic resources, we look forward to deepening our collaboration across medical humanitarianism, cutting-edge clinical research, and talent development – nurturing the next generation of global medical leaders while advancing medical innovation and public health well-being worldwide.”
