Candace Johnson has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center since 2015, becoming the first woman to lead the institution. Under her leadership, Roswell Park has strengthened in immunotherapy and translational cancer research, while expanding its clinical footprint and community reach. During her tenure, the center has grown its workforce and patient volume, increased national and international recruitment of clinicians and scientists, and reinforced its role as a hub for innovative cancer care in Western New York and beyond.

During Johnson’s leadership era, Roswell Park has made targeted investments in immuno-oncology, cellular therapies, and early-phase clinical trials, accelerating the translation of laboratory discoveries into patient care. She has overseen the expansion of multidisciplinary cancer programs and community outreach initiatives aimed at improving access to advanced cancer treatment, particularly in underserved populations. Her leadership has emphasized integration across research, clinical care, and education, positioning Roswell Park as a comprehensive cancer center with growing influence in national research networks and collaborative oncology initiatives.

Before becoming CEO, Johnson served as Roswell Park’s Deputy Director and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, helping build seamless bench-to-bedside development pipelines. A trained immunologist, she brings deep scientific leadership to her executive role and continues to serve in national advisory capacities, including chairing the NCI Frederick National Laboratory Advisory Committee.
