Wolfgang Fecke has been appointed as Executive Director of the Association of European Cancer Leagues

The Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Wolfgang Fecke as its new Executive Director, effective today.

Dr Fecke brings nearly 30 years of experience in life science research and drug discovery and will lead ECL into a pivotal new chapter in its mission to reduce the burden of cancer across Europe. His appointment marks a continued commitment to ECL’s role at the forefront of Europe’s fight against cancer.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr Fecke said:

“It is an honour to join the Association of European Cancer Leagues and lead an organisation so committed to improving the lives of those affected by cancer. While significant progress has been made, critical challenges in cancer prevention, treatment and care – especially for the most vulnerable – still remain. I look forward to building on ECL’s powerful legacy and work together with our members, EU institutions and partners to further reduce Europe’s cancer burden.”

He will take over the baton from Dr Wendy Yared, who led ECL for nearly two decades and played a central role in shaping its leadership and impact at the European level. Starting today, she will continue to support the organisation as a Senior Scientific Advisor.

Dr Ramon Reyes, President of the Association of European Cancer Leagues, said:

“Without urgent and united action, cancer is on track to become the leading cause of death in the EU, with lives lost expected to rise by over 24% by 2035. At this pivotal moment, we are thrilled to welcome Wolfgang Fecke as our new Executive Director. We are confident he is the right person to deliver the greatest possible impact over this critical decade for the future of cancer care, as we work to reduce the growing cancer burden across Europe and ensure that prevention and high-quality care reach all patients.”
