Pia Banerjee Joins Freenome as Vice President of Digital Health

Pia Banerjee, PhD, has joined Freenome as Vice President of Digital Health, taking responsibility for the company’s digital health strategy and platform as it enters its next chapter as a public company.

In her new role, Dr. Banerjee will lead the development of digital experiences designed to support patients and healthcare providers and make personalized early cancer detection more accessible.

Building a More Accessible Path to Early Detection

Dr. Banerjee’s work at Freenome will focus on creating trusted digital tools that help patients and clinicians understand complex health information and take appropriate action.

Announcing her appointment, she emphasized the potential of technology to address gaps in access to care, empower patients, and improve long-term clinical outcomes.

She also highlighted early cancer detection as one of the most important opportunities to improve survival, particularly when cancer is identified at a stage when treatment is more likely to be effective.

Dr. Banerjee expressed her gratitude to Riley Ennis, Robert Guigley, and the wider Freenome team for welcoming her during her first month with the company.

A Career at the Intersection of Healthcare and Technology

Dr. Banerjee is a clinical neuropsychologist and an experienced digital health and product leader. Throughout her career, she has developed and scaled digital health products intended to improve care for millions of patients each year.

Before joining Freenome, she served as the inaugural Director of Innovation at the American Cancer Society, where she led the organization’s national digital health strategy.

Her work included a portfolio of technology-enabled products, such as the American Cancer Society Clinical Trials Matching Program, known as ACS ACTS, and the ACS CARES application.

Developing New Models of Patient Care

Previously, Dr. Banerjee served as Senior Vice President of Clinical Strategy and Product and as the founding clinical executive at Neuroglee Therapeutics.

In that position, she developed technology-supported care models, clinical decision-support tools, and a nationwide virtual clinic.

Her work has consistently focused on translating complex medical and scientific information into practical solutions that can support clinical decision-making and improve the patient experience.

Research That Influenced Clinical Guidelines

Earlier in her career, Dr. Banerjee conducted cancer survivorship research at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Her research was published in JAMA Oncology and the Journal of Clinical Oncology and contributed to national changes in clinical care guidelines.

This background in cancer survivorship, clinical psychology, product development, and digital healthcare has shaped her approach to designing tools that address both the medical and personal challenges associated with cancer care.

Leadership Beyond Freenome

Dr. Banerjee earned her undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received her Master of Arts and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis.

Alongside her role at Freenome, she advises healthcare startups, serves on the board of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society, and speaks on digital health, healthcare innovation, and the role of technology in improving patient care.

Her appointment comes as Freenome continues its work in personalized early cancer detection, with a growing focus on building accessible experiences that help patients and clinicians use health information with greater confidence.
