Paul Pearlman Named Acting Chief of NCI’s Imaging Technology Development Branch

Paul Pearlman, PhD, has been appointed Acting Chief of the Imaging Technology Development Branch within the Cancer Imaging Program at the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

The Cancer Imaging Program operates within the NCI’s Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis and supports the development of imaging technologies that can improve cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment planning, and therapeutic monitoring.

A New Chapter in Cancer Imaging

In his new position, Dr. Paul Pearlman will support research and technology development focused on advancing the quality, clinical value, and accessibility of cancer imaging.

Announcing the appointment, he emphasized his interest in working with colleagues across the Cancer Imaging Program to accelerate innovations that strengthen cancer diagnosis and treatment planning.

The move follows 13 years at the NCI Center for Global Health, where he contributed to initiatives aimed at reducing the global cancer burden and expanding access to cancer-related technologies in resource-limited settings.

Reflecting on his time at the Center for Global Health, Dr. Pearlman expressed gratitude to the colleagues and collaborators who supported its international research and cancer-control efforts.

Experience Across Engineering, Imaging, and Global Health

Dr. Paul Pearlman previously served as a Program Director and Lead for Global Health Technology Research at the NCI Center for Global Health. In this role, he oversaw initiatives supporting the translation of cancer technologies for use in low-resource settings.

His research background includes biomedical image analysis and the development and evaluation of clinically applicable computer-aided methods for cancer diagnosis and treatment planning.

Before transitioning into science administration, Dr. Paul Pearlman conducted research at the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Electronic Systems Laboratory, the Yale School of Medicine Department of Diagnostic Radiology, and the Image Sciences Institute at University Medical Center Utrecht.

He began his work in science administration as an American Association for the Advancement of Science Science and Technology Policy Fellow.

Academic and Professional Background

Dr. Paul Pearlman earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He later received an MS, MPhil, and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Yale University.

He is also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

His appointment brings together extensive experience in biomedical engineering, imaging research, translational technology development, science administration, and global cancer control.
