Monica Bertagnolli is Appointed President of the National Academy of Medicine

Monica Bertagnolli, President of the National Academy of Medicine, shared National Academy of Medicine’s post on LinkedIn:

“It is with great enthusiasm and humility that I have accepted the position of President of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), a post that will begin in July 2026.

Created in 1863 by Congress at the request of President Abraham Lincoln, the National Academies have contributed science-based guidance to the nation and the world throughout 160+ years of dramatic technological and societal changes.

Academy membership includes leaders from all disciplines of science, engineering, and medicine who work in universities, industry, nonprofit corporations, philanthropic foundations, and government. Today, it is more important than ever that the Academy’s programs engage talent across all of society to guide and catalyze actions that will address the many challenges we face.

I will be spending the next 6 months working with current NAM President Victor Dzau to ensure the greatest impact from the critical work he has championed. I also look forward to hearing advice from all who have a stake in NAM’s work. Going forward, how can this talented organization best deploy its resources and human capital to achieve better health for all?”

Quoting National Academy of Medicine’s post:

“Monica Bertagnolli, former NIH director, has been elected by NAM members as the Academy’s next president.

She will begin her term in July 2026, succeeding Victor J. Dzau, who has served as president since 2014.

A surgical oncologist, Dr. Bertagnolli brings a strong focus on the biomedical science ecosystem, improving U.S. health care delivery, and data integration across systems. She has a deep commitment to addressing health disparities, particularly in rural areas, and earning trust in science, medicine, and public health.

‘Monica Bertagnolli is an exceptional leader, clinician, and scientist whose career has been defined by collaboration and a steadfast commitment to patients and communities,’ said Dr. Dzau. ‘Her experience leading major research institutions and driving innovation in data, clinical trials, and the learning health system will serve the NAM—and the nation—extraordinarily well.’

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Bertagnolli.”
