“At the OSUCCC – James, our work is driven by curiosity, collaboration and a shared commitment to advancing more personalized cancer care.
To move that work forward, I am pleased to announce that D. Neil Hayes, has been appointed Director of the Institute for Precision Cancer Medicine, effective Sept. 14, 2026. Dr. Neil Hayes will also serve as Deputy Director of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, leading and further strengthening our nationally recognized leadership in cancer genomics and precision oncology.
In these roles, Dr. Hayes will help accelerate the OSUCCC – James‘ precision cancer medicine by bringing together advances in clinical genomics, translational research, data science, and health equity to improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Hayes will provide scientific leadership to expand access to genomic testing, accelerate the adoption of emerging genomic technologies and strengthen the infrastructure needed to integrate genomic data into research and clinical care. A strong advocate for team science, he will work closely with leaders across the cancer program to support genomically informed treatment decisions, expand biomarker-driven clinical trials and foster collaborations that build on the many strengths of the OSUCCC – James.
A nationally recognized leader in cancer genomics and translational research, Dr. Hayes brings a rare combination of scientific vision, clinical expertise and collaborative leadership that will further strengthen the OSUCCC – James as a destination for innovation in precision oncology.
Most recently, Dr. Hayes served as Director of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s Center for Cancer Research, where he also held leadership roles as Assistant Dean for Cancer Research, Chief of Hematology and Oncology and Van Vleet Endowed Professor of Medical Oncology. He also holds an appointment as adjunct faculty in the Department of Computational Biology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Dr. Hayes earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed training at Boston University School of Medicine, Tufts New England Medical Center and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He also holds graduate degrees from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Tufts.
Dr. Hayes will advance our leadership in precision cancer medicine and accelerate discoveries that improve patient outcomes. I look forward to partnering with him as we continue shaping the future of cancer care, research and education at the OSUCCC – James.
