Kimryn Rathmell Welcomes Alex Bates as the New Director of Executive Communications for OSUCCC – James

Kimryn Rathmell, Chief Executive Officer of Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“How well we communicate our life-saving science and care to engage people as our partners and benefit everyone facing cancer makes all the difference in the advances we achieve in oncology.

That is why I’m thrilled to welcome Alex Bates as the new Director of Executive Communications for the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). Alex adds a great combination of communications expertise and leadership experience to our team at such an important time in our field.

As a key member of the cancer program’s leadership team, this new office will advise on, develop and implement communications strategies for the OSUCCC – James Office of the CEO that reflect our commitment to transparency, engagement and connection, and will also lead the executive communications team for The James. Through these strategies, Alex and the team will help ensure that both our internal teams and external partners remain informed and engaged with the important work happening across the OSUCCC – James.

Alex brings 20 years of communications experience, shaping national science campaigns and guiding senior executives, serving as communications director for the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health leading communications for landmark achievements, including the first truly complete human genome sequence and the first human pangenome reference, while advancing dialogue on sensitive topics such as the history of eugenics.

At the National Science Foundation (NSF), Alex directed communications for the Directorate for Engineering and the BRAIN initiative, leading campaigns on robotics, sexual harassment in science, and disaster recovery—work that was recognized by numerous NSF Director’s Awards for Excellence.

Alex also managed BrainFacts.org, a $1.2 million neuroscience website, and co-founded The Science Underground, LLC. Alex holds master’s degrees in astronomy and journalism, and a bachelor’s in physics and English.

I look forward to the impact Alex will have on our work at the OSUCCC – James. Strengthening how we tell our story and foster meaningful connections across the community is key to accelerating progress as we strive every day to create a cancer-free world – EVERY person, EVERY discovery, EVERY time.”
