Daniel Boffa Begins Two-Year Term as Chair of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer

Daniel Boffa, MD, MBA, chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and professor of thoracic surgery at Yale School of Medicine, has begun a two-year term as chair of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC).

An expert in cancer quality and outcomes, Boffa assumes the leadership position at a time when cancer care programs across the United States face increasing financial and workforce challenges.

In his new role, he will help establish priorities for the Commission, represent the organization on important oncology issues, and strengthen relationships with CoC-accredited cancer programs.

Leading an Organization That Shapes Cancer Care Nationwide

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer plays an important role in establishing standards for cancer care across the United States and Puerto Rico.

The Commission sets standards for approximately 1,400 accredited cancer programs, which collectively diagnose and/or treat more than 74% of all newly diagnosed cancers in the country.

Through its accreditation standards, the CoC helps define expectations for cancer programs and supports the delivery of high-quality oncology care.

As chair, Boffa will contribute to setting the Commission’s priorities while maintaining close engagement with the institutions responsible for delivering cancer care to patients nationwide.

Addressing Financial and Workforce Challenges in Oncology

One of Boffa’s priorities during his two-year term will be helping hospital teams maintain high standards of cancer care despite financial pressures and workforce challenges.

These challenges represent important considerations for cancer programs working to meet established quality standards while responding to the demands of clinical practice.

His leadership will focus on supporting hospital teams in their efforts to deliver high-quality cancer care under these conditions.

The position will also involve strengthening relationships between the Commission and its accredited programs, ensuring continued engagement with the institutions responsible for implementing CoC standards.

Bringing Expertise in Cancer Quality and Outcomes to National Leadership

As chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and professor of thoracic surgery at Yale School of Medicine, Boffa brings clinical and academic experience to his new leadership position.

His expertise in cancer quality and outcomes is particularly relevant to the Commission’s responsibility for establishing standards across a large network of accredited cancer programs.

During his tenure, Boffa will serve as a spokesperson on oncology issues and help guide the Commission’s priorities over the next two years.

His appointment places him at the forefront of national efforts to maintain high standards of cancer care while addressing the financial and workforce challenges facing hospitals and oncology teams.
