Janet L. Abrahm Receives the 2024 ASCO Walther Cancer Foundation Supportive Oncology Award
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has announced Janet L. Abrahm, MD, FACP, FAAHPM, as the recipient of the 2024 ASCO Walther Cancer Foundation Supportive Oncology Award . This award acknowledges Dr. Abrahm’s dedication and contributions to the field of global oncology.
Janet L. Abrahm, M.D. is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is both a former practicing oncologist and an expert in the palliative care needs of patients with cancer. She has over 20 years’ experience in the forefront of palliative care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She is the author of four comprehensive books on supportive and palliative care for patients with cancer and cancer pain management, and she is an award-winning clinician and educator in palliative care.
Dr. Abrahm has spent over 10 years as a faculty member in the national DFCI Master Course for oncologists, speaking on a broad array of cancer-related palliative care topics. Since 2010, Dr. Abrahm has participated internationally in the Education in Palliative and End-of-Life (EPEC)-Oncology course as a master teacher. Her work in this area has led to numerous recognitions and awards as a thought leader, mentor, and educator. Along with her work at DFCI, Dr. Abrahm continues her work as an innovator in the field of palliative care, participating in a research team that leverages national clinical practice guidelines to harness clinical decision support to enhance oncologists’ management of their patients’ symptoms. About the ASCO Walther Cancer Foundation Supportive Oncology Award
Endowed by the Walther Cancer Foundation, this award and lecture was established to recognize a distinguished lecturer and leader with multiple, significant, and enduring contributions to palliative and supportive care in oncology through the prevention, assessment and management of cancer- and treatment-related suffering.
