“Fasting Boosts NK Cell-Mediated Anti-Cancer Immunity
New study reveals that cyclic fasting enhances natural killer (NK) cell activity, improving responses to solid and metastatic tumors.
Key findings:
- Fasting leads to NK cell redistribution to the bone marrow
- Boosted fatty acid metabolism via increased CPT1A expression
- Enhanced IFN-γ production through IL-12 priming by bone marrow myeloid cells
- Requires S1PR5 & CXCR4 for NK cell trafficking
In both mice and humans, fasting lowered circulating NK cells but strengthened their anti-tumor function.
Insight: Dietary restriction may reprogram innate immunity—a promising path to improve immunotherapy outcomes.”
