Voice of the Families: Mekdes Aklilu And His Father – CANCaRe Africa
CANCaRe Africa shared a post on LinkedIn
“Voice of the families post N32 Mekdes Aklilu and his father.
Mekdes Aklilu, a 1 year and 6-month-old child, was brought to Jimma University Medical Centre after unsuccessful treatment from a local health centre.
At Jimma University Medical Centre, after the necessary investigations were completed, Mekdes was diagnosed with Wilms tumour.
‘We had initially borrowed money to support the treatment but eventually had to sell farmland to come to the hospital.’ The father explained.
Mekdes is the third of four children, and her father expressed deep concern not only for her health but also for the well-being of the rest of the family. Both parents had to travel together to care for Mekdes during her treatment.
Mekdes has now started pre-surgery chemotherapy and is relatively stable. Her father was very relieved and grateful when they received financial support through the Zero Abandonment program, which provides cash transfers to ensure patients stay on treatment. He has promised to continue with her treatment and is hopeful for her recovery.
Appropriate consent given.”
