Ulrika Årehed Kågström, President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and the Secretary-General of the Swedish Cancer Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“March 4: International HPV Awareness Day
HPV-related cancers can affect everyone—yet access to life-saving vaccination remains unequal.
Every year, 350,000 lives are lost to cervical cancer—deaths that could have been prevented. In Sweden, high vaccination rates for both boys and girls put us on track to eliminate cervical cancer within just a few years. But globally, much more needs to be done.
Recently, two of Sweden’s 21 regions took a bold step by following new recommendations from the Public Health Agency and offering free HPV vaccination to everyone up to the age of 26. This kind of leadership is exactly what the world needs to stop the spread of HPV and prevent thousands of cancer cases in both men and women every year.
Gender-neutral vaccination is a game-changer—not only for eliminating cervical cancer but also for protecting against other HPV-related cancers.
More countries must take action. Let’s drive this change globally and save countless lives.
