Tracey O’Brien Reflects on the Emotional Toll of Cancer on Mothers and Children
Tracey O’Brien, Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of Cancer Institute NSW, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today is a day of celebration, one I look forward to spending with my kids and my mum. But as a paediatric oncologist, it’s a day where I can’t help but think of the mothers I’ve had the privilege of meeting. The mothers who would do anything to take their child’s pain away. Some will be taking in every moment with their now healthy child. Others will struggle to get through the day, thinking of how much they’ve lost.
I also think of the incredibly brave and resilient children and young people I’ve been humbled to meet and care for. Some are now adults, experiencing the joy of motherhood themselves. For others, today is an annual reminder that the very treatment that saved them, has also taken away their chance of ever carrying a child.
Cancer’s impact is ever pervasive, following far too many of us, every day. We need to and must do more to change this. As we spend time with our mums, let’s spare a thought for those who have lost their mums to cancer, or who find today difficult. Those who are holding each other’s hands, thankful to have even just one more moment together.”
Tracey O’Brien shared a personal reflection on how cancer continues to shape the lives of mothers, children, and survivors, highlighting the emotional complexities faced by families affected by the disease.
