Congratulations to my colleague and friend A/Prof Rahul Ladwa The University of Queensland/Queensland Health/Metro North Health who led, presented and now published DESQUAMATE Trial in JCO American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO):
Response-Adapted De-Escalation of Surgery and Radiation for cSCC:
This study addresses a crucial yet often overlooked question: can we do less, without compromising outcomes?
By using a response-adapted approach, this trial explores the possibility of de-escalating and in patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma who have a major response to neoadjuvant immunotherapy.
It’s an elegant example of patient-centric trial design:
• Respecting functional and cosmetic outcomes
• Reducing treatment burden
• Anchored in the biology of response
As we move toward precision not just in drugs but in decisions, work like this helps us redefine what good care looks like—for both efficacy and quality of life.
