The recipients of the 2024 ESMO Society Awards

The 2024 ESMO Society Awards have been announced on 6th August by ESMO.

“ESMO is proud to announce the recipients of the 2024 ESMO Society Awards.

Recognised for their contribution to advancing the field of oncology and supporting fellow oncologists in their professional growth, the 2024 awardees are:

  • ESMO Award: Ann Partridge, USA

Ann H. Partridge, MD, MPH, is a prominent medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer. She serves as Vice Chair of Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where she founded and directs the Program for Young Adults with Breast Cancer and the Adult Survivorship Program. Holding the Eric P. Winer, MD, Chair in Breast Cancer Research, she is also a Senior Physician at Dana-Farber and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

  • ESMO Award for Translational Research: Serena Nik-Zainal, UK

Serena Nik-Zainal is a Professor of Genomic Medicine and Bioinformatics at the University of Cambridge and a CRUK Advanced Clinician Scientist. She serves as an Honorary Consultant in Clinical Genetics. Her work centers on advancing mutational signature analysis through computational innovations and sophisticated cell-based modeling, aiming to accelerate the clinical application of mutational signatures.

  • ESMO Women for Oncology Award: Myung-Ju Ahn, Republic of Korea

Myung-Ju Ahn is a Professor of Hemato-Oncology at Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine in Seoul, Korea. She is an active member and leader in various cancer research organizations, including ISLCA, AACR and ASCO. Ahn also chairs the Multidisciplinary Immuno-oncology Study Group and is the President of the Korean Society of Medical Oncology.

She serves as Chief of the Executive Committee at the Korean Cancer Study Group and Chairperson of the Lung Cancer Disease Committee. Her research focuses on developing predictive and prognostic markers for lung cancer, advancing drug discovery, and creating a genome atlas for non-small cell lung cancer.

  • ESMO Lifetime Achievement Award: John Haanen, Netherlands

John Haanen is the Head of the Melanoma Clinic at CHUV Lausanne University Hospital and a Professor of Translational Immunotherapy of Cancer at Leiden University Medical Center. He is a Leader Research theme Immunotherapy at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI-AVL). His research focuses on developing innovative immunotherapies, often in collaboration with Prof. Ton Schumacher. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of ESMO IOTECH.

Award lectures will be delivered at the ESMO24 Opening Ceremony on Friday, 13 September.
