Sheraz Azhar: Day 1 at the Oncology Academy Masterclass – Breast Cancer: Moving Forward Together

“Day 1 at the Oncology Academy Masterclass – Breast Cancer: Moving Forward Together (London, by Novartis)

Just wrapped up an insightful first day at this masterclass in London, and it’s been full of practical learning, great discussions, and fresh ideas for the future of breast cancer care.

Some reflections from today:

1. Prevention and early intervention came up again and again, making sure we reach patients earlier through primary and community care is vital.

2. I was really inspired to hear about service innovations happening around the country: VAP clinics, dedicated SACT toxicity nursing roles, and closer involvement of GPs in cancer care.

3. A standout for me was the session on ICI cardiotoxicity – a reminder that while immunotherapies bring real benefits, they also come with risks like myocarditis, arrhythmias, and other cardiac issues, especially in patients with existing heart problems or autoimmune conditions.

4. The discussions on HRT and vaginal hormone therapy after a breast cancer diagnosis were also really eye-opening. It’s such a delicate balance between helping patients manage menopausal symptoms and ensuring safety.

And the honest look at current NHS pressures, from staff wellbeing to admin burden, makes it clear that new ways of working are essential to keep up with increasing treatment complexity.

It was great to hear how digital tools and AI are being considered as part of the solution, whether for earlier detection of treatment side effects like cardiotoxicity, or to help clinicians make more informed, data-driven decisions. This is exactly what we’re passionate about at OncsCare, supporting oncology teams with practical, smart digital solutions that make patient care safer and more efficient.

Plenty to take away from today and looking forward to another day of learning and connecting tomorrow!”
