Sendurai Mani: Some Moments Leave a Lasting Mark – Not Just On Our Careers, But On How We Think
Sendurai Mani, Dean’s Chair for Translational Oncology at Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“When One Talk Can Change Everything
Some moments leave a lasting mark – not just on our careers, but on how we think.
When I was finishing my Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, I had the incredible opportunity to hear Dr. Robert Weinberg deliver a lecture that would shape the course of my scientific journey.
He began with a story:
“I asked two of my postdocs, Dr. Matthew Meyerson and Dr. Chris Counter, not to work on cloning human telomerase. But they didn’t listen – and they went ahead and cloned it. That work became a paper in Cell.”
That moment hit me hard. It wasn’t just the science – it was the freedom to question, to challenge, to innovate. Bob didn’t just tolerate bold ideas – he cultivated them. And that’s when I knew: I wanted to work in a lab that values intellectual independence.
So I asked him for a postdoc opportunity. And he said yes.
Today, I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Matthew Meyerson and sharing how that talk—and their bold decision – helped shape my career. It was a full-circle moment that reminded me: science moves forward when we empower people to trust their instincts.”
