Sebastian Szmit: Risk stratification and long-term follow-up proposed by ESC guidelines on cardiooncology
Sebastian Szmit shared a post by Monika Majewska, Editor, journalist, conference moderator at Pulse of Medicine, on LinkedIn:
”I would like to thank Professor Piotr Rutkowski – President of Polish Society of Oncology for the opportunity to speak during VI Congress of Polish Oncology and present risk stratification and long-term follow-up proposed by European Society of Cardiology guidelines on cardiooncology.
Many thanks to Monika Majewska – Editor of Puls Medycyny for the summary of my lecture.”
Quoting Monika Majewska‘s post:
”In the case of patients undergoing radical treatment, we think about a good prognosis, not only in terms of oncology. We also want to improve the long-term cardiac prognosis – this is one of the topics raised by Sebastian Szmit during the Educational Symposium: Cardio-oncology, which took place as part of the VI Congress of Polish Oncology.
In this aspect, monitoring for the first year after therapy is particularly important in this group of patients, because cardiac complications very often appear in them immediately after the end of treatment, especially after chemotherapy with the use of anthracyclines.
The study showed that most episodes of decrease in cardiac ejection fraction were recorded during the first year after the end of anthracycline-based chemotherapy.
At the same time, the effectiveness of cardiac treatment is highest when it is implemented immediately. Therefore, monitoring for the first year after oncological therapy makes sense, because this is when the greatest risk of cardiotoxicity occurs and then we are effective with cardiac intervention – emphasized the expert.”
Sebastian Szmit is the Chair of the Council of Cardio-Oncology Study Group on Thrombosis at the European Society of Cardiology. He also serves as the Chair of Supportive Care and is a Board Member of the Polish Society of Clinical Oncology.
Additionally, he holds the position of Chair of the Education and Training Advisory Committee at the International Cardio-Oncology Society and is a Consultant at the Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology.
