Wafik S. El-Deiry Reflects on Paul Calabresi’s Legacy and NCI K12 Award Challenges
Wafik S. El-Deiry, Associate Dean for Oncologic Sciences at the Warren Alpert Medical School and Director of the Legorreta Cancer Center at Brown University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Paul Calabresi, a pioneer in cancer therapeutics, was a statesman in the field of oncology, Past ASCO President, member of National Academy of Medicine (IOM) and a leader at Brown University for over 2 decades. Our Legorreta Cancer Center has tried to bring an NCI K12 Calabresi Award to train clinical oncology investigators since 2020. The score improved from the 40’s to the 20’s over the years. On the first submission one reviewer gave the grant a perfect 1.0 score in all categories. In 2025, we have been left with no hope by NCI for funding, no plan to advocate given current budget, but with reassurances that NCI leadership will with confidence work to balance many priorities including training.”
Wafik S. El-Deiry shared his reflections on Paul Calabresi’s legacy in oncology and detailed efforts by the Legorreta Cancer Center to secure the NCI K12 Award, noting score improvements over the years but current funding challenges.
