Rob Winn: The One Big Beautiful Bill Act Is Expected to Deal a Massive Blow to Medicaid Coverage
Rob Winn, Director of VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The One Big Beautiful Bill Act is expected to deal a massive blow to Medicaid coverage and leave millions without insurance by instituting a work requirement for beneficiaries.
This could make it harder for patients who are on Medicaid to access life-saving care, particularly those in rural communities who are often more at risk for cancer.
VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center is part of the VCU Health System in Richmond, VA, a safety net hospital, where nearly 30% of patients are on Medicaid. Across the country, approximately one in four people in rural areas have Medicaid.
This is not just going to be an issue for densely populated areas. You’re going to have very small rural communities in Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia, Alabama, Virginia, and others that will be significantly impacted if there’s changes to Medicaid funding. This has major implications for other cancer centers with large rural populations, many of whom rely on Medicaid to pay for their treatments.
Particularly, people in those communities with cancer, there is actually no way to ignore that they may be harmed by some of these cuts. At Massey, we do not turn anyone away. But cuts like this make it more difficult to prevent and treat cancer in the communities that are most impacted by it.
