Olubukola Ayodele’s mission to transform cancer care systems

Olubukola Ayodele, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Hello LinkedIn! I thought it was time to introduce myself properly, as I’ve gained new followers recently.

I’m a Black female breast oncologist, researcher, educator, and unapologetic advocate for equity in cancer care, practising in the UK but rooted in global health.

My work spans clinical care, health systems thinking, and academic research, but at the core of everything I do is a single question:

How do we make cancer care fairer, faster, and more humane for everyone?

Too many patients, especially those from ethnic minority backgrounds, underserved communities, or lower-income countries, still face unacceptable barriers to early diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, and survivorship support.

I believe in disrupting the status quo.

I’m not afraid to ask difficult questions in boardrooms, clinical meetings, or public platforms.

I advocate passionately and loudly for:

  • Representation in clinical trials and cancer campaigns
  • Policy changes that prioritise access and equity
  • Education that places lived experiences at its core
  • Amplifying patient voices in every room where decisions are made

As a researcher, my work explores not only breast cancer biology and management but also how systemic inequalities affect patient outcomes.

As an educator, I teach to empower the next generation of healthcare professionals and inspire the public to think critically and act with compassion.

As a global oncology advocate, I collaborate across borders to share knowledge and build more resilient cancer systems in lower-resource settings.

But beyond the titles, I’m a pragmatic oncologist. I believe in doing what works for the patient in front of me and for the system we’re trying to improve. I balance science and empathy, data and humanity.

This space is where I’ll share insights, challenges, advocacy work, and reflections from the clinic to the global stage.

If you care about transforming cancer care from the inside out, welcome. Let’s connect, collaborate, and create impact together.”
