Voice of the families: Mikias Mekonen and his parents – CANCaRe Africa
CANCaRe Africa shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Voice of the families post #31 Mikias Mekonen and his parents.
Meet Mikias Mekonen and his parents. Mikias is a 3-year-old boy living with his four siblings and farmer parents in Burie district, West Gojam Zone, in Ethiopia.
Two months ago, Mikias got sick, blood and imaging tests raised a suspicion of blood cancer. He was then referred to the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (UoGCSH), the only pediatric oncology center in the region, located about 350 kilometers away, for confirmation and treatment.
At UGCSH, further diagnostic tests, confirmed the diagnosis of blood cancer.
With continued psychological support, counseling, and enrollment in a cash transfer program, his parents agreed to start with Mikias’s treatment. Mikias is now completing the induction phase of chemotherapy, and his symptoms are beginning to improve, offering hope for his recovery.
Appropriate consent given.”
