May Abdel-Wahab: A few highlights from this month’s IAEA’s Human Health Division activities
May Abdel-Wahab, Director Division of Human Health at International Atomic Energy Agency, shared on LinkedIn:
“A few highlights from this month’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s Human Health Division activities:
As part of the IAEA’s support to its 12 Rays Of Hope Anchor Centres, a workshop on developing training programs for gynaecologic radiotherapy successfully concluded. Each Anchor Centre was equipped with Virtual Reality headsets – to facilitate innovative 3-D immersive training, with cervical cancer VR models, developed by IAEA-NAHU. this will provide Anchor centre trainees with innovative experiences.
Rays of Hope and Anchor Centres play an important role on global and regional levels in expanding cancer care access to all. During CSW69 or ECR 2025 we discussed how the initiative is beneficial for those affected by cancer.
Together with Fukushima Medical University we organized a consultancy meeting for medical doctors in Japan to explore various protocols and communications techniques to enhance patient understandings of radiation medicine and radiation exposure.
Another meeting at the IAEA Headquarters gathered experts to examine radiotherapy’s effects on cancer patients’ nutritional status. Experts identified significant knowledge gaps, paving the way for a new IAEA research project.
To support medical specialists across the globe on ensuring the highest standards of safety, we released a new publication as part of Human Health Series on Quality Assurance and Optimization for Fluoroscopically Guided Interventional Procedures. Through this first-of-its kind guidance from the Agency, healthcare providers can draw on best practices and standardized protocols to integrate cutting-edge technology with evidence-based medicine – all to the benefit of their patients.
With the new month ahead, we will continue our collaborative work in supporting innovation, training and research as well as safe and effective high-quality access to cancer care globally.”
