Mar Estupiñán: Happy to see our poster displayed at Ca-PRI Conference 2025

Mar Estupiñán, Public Health Principal at Croydon Council, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Happy to see our poster displayed at Ca-PRI Conference 2025 – thanks, Esra Hassan.

We presented our study about the inequities experienced by Black and Asian women along the breast cancer pathway. We discussed the concept of candidacy in cancer. Candidacy refers to how individuals assess and negotiate their eligibility to access the NHS, how professionals assess patients’ eligibility and deservingness for services, and how responsive the NHS is to the diverse population they serve.

Through candidacy lens, we underscored how inequities emerged at patient, inter-personal, and healthcare system level. We underlined how inequities in care experience and outcomes are in part due to how individuals see themselves as candidates for services and how this leads to longer appraisal for potential cancer symptoms before they seek help. We highlighted how primary care play a key role in early diagnosis and GPs gatekeeping power can lead to longer diagnosis intervals that negatively impact women from Black and Asian backgrounds.

We suggested some actions to improve cancer care experience and early diagnosis:

Individuals:

  •  Increase patients’ agency to seek early help.
  • Empower patients to feel confident to navigate the care pathway.

Healthcare professionals:

  • Train and equip professionals to delivery cross-cultural care.
  • Remove barriers to improve patients’ progression through primary care and cancer services.

Healthcare system:

  • Collaborate with patients to co-design tailored and culturally sensitive cancer services.
  • Improve representation in cancer national surveys.
