Lola Adeyemi: Two significant global events which I attended this year

“As we wrap up the year it is important for me to highlight two significant global events which I attended that reflect my commitment to advancing health innovations especially with life-altering diseases such as cancer.
In July, on invitation of The White House Biden Cancer Moonshot, I had the privilege of attending Africa Cancer Care Forum hosted in the Treaty Room of the White House.
The event brought together world-leading scientists, advocates, and policymakers with one mission: to accelerate breakthroughs in cancer research, prevention, and treatment in Africa and around the world. Being in the midst of such visionary discussions underscored the urgent need to push boundaries in how we tackle this devastating disease.
My take home was that no one Nation can solve this problem but together we can develop and share new ways to prevent, detect, treat and survive cancer by collaborating to ease the burden on patients and our loved ones. You can find more information on the promise and progress via the link.
In September, I participated as a co-chair in a maiden World Health Organization convening at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, focused on co-creating priorities for cancer 2030 with people affected by cancer and emergent leaders.
In addition I participated in the WHO-Global Breast Cancer Initiative: Access to Essential Breast Cancer Medicines and Technologies dialogue and the Cervical Cancer Elimination informal partner meeting. These forums brought together people affected by cancer, emergent leaders, policy makers and private sector from around the world.
The discussions were impactful, as we addressed the need for cancer strategies to be not just innovative, but equitable and patient-centered. A key takeaway from Bente Mikkelsen’s statement at the event is that ‘collaboration is key to ensuring that cancer policies truly reflect the needs of those most affected.’
This encapsulates the essence of what we must aim for: a future where the voices of patients, survivors, and caregivers are not only heard but are central to shaping the global cancer agenda.
Through these engagements, my focus remains clear—driving impactful collaborations that leverage expertise from across borders, ensuring that our cancer care strategies are not just effective, but accessible to all, regardless of background.
These moments of dialogue and cooperation reaffirm my dedication to fostering innovative, patient-first solutions for cancer care in Nigeria and beyond. Together, we can build a future where comprehensive, compassionate care is available to everyone who needs it.
As we plan ahead for 2025 and beyond, thank you to those that have shared their time , knowledge and opportunities with me and I look forward to future collaborations.”
