Miriam Mutebi: How Local Knowledge Could Help Clinics Next Door or Across the Continent

Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The AORTIC Journal: A Home for Our Stories, Our Science.

Did you know that many African researchers often can’t get published in global journals?

Not because their work is bad, but because it’s too ‘local’ to appeal to global interest.

Meanwhile, that local knowledge could help clinics next door or across the continent.

Our new AORTIC-Africa Journal of Cancer Research fixes this gap.

Think:

  • African Editors – Experts working in Africa and the diaspora who understand our healthsystems, contexts, and communities. They know which questions truly matter here.
  • African Peer Reviewers – When your work is reviewed by someone who has worked in your environment, they see the real value, not just a data point, but a solution.
  • African Health Priorities, Front and Centre – Instead of pursuing only ‘global hot topics’, we aim to publish research that tackles what burdens our families most: late diagnosis, access barriers, innovative low-cost fixes, stigma, and follow-up care.
We are incredibly pleased to announce our new Editor in Chief, Prof Sulma Ibrahim Mohammed (see photo), who has assembled a stellar board.

More on this in posts to come!

PS: If you’re a researcher, watch this space. We’re about to open submissions.

If you’re a supporter, know that your support helps us amplify African evidence for African cancer care.”
