Lisa Lacasse: Progress in Survival Thanks to Investments in Research

Lisa Lacasse, President of American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is encouraged to see the president elevate the fight against childhood cancer during his first address to Congress.

While pediatric cancer incidence has increased in the last few decades, the cancer mortality rate among children and adolescents younger than 20 years declined by more than 50% from 1975 to 2022, according to the National Cancer Institute, though lasting effects from treatment persist.

This progress in survival has been possible thanks to investments in research and breakthroughs in treatment.

The evidence is clear that the most effective pathways to improving not only survival rates, but quality of survivorship and ending cancer as we know it, for everyone, are through sustained and robust government investment in cancer research and prevention and ensuring everyone has access to affordable, comprehensive health care.

We look forward to working with partners in the childhood cancer community, the administration and Congress to drive further progress in the fight against cancer.”
