John’s story – embracing life after a shocking diagnosis – EGFR Positive Lung Cancer UK
EGFR Positive Lung Cancer UK made the following post on LinkedIn:
“John’s lung cancer diagnosis was a complete shock. A retired headteacher, he was living an active life when a persistent cough, shoulder pain, and a quiet wheeze led to a Stage 4 diagnosis.
As a non-smoker with no obvious risk factors, it was the last thing he expected.
Months later, an EGFR mutation was found, changing his treatment path.
Now, John is focused on making the most of retirement—volunteering, gardening, and planning holidays to embrace new experiences.

Lung cancer symptoms can be vague and aren’t always related to breathing. Signs like fatigue, persistent pain, or a stubborn cough could be worth checking out whatever your age or smoking history. If something feels off, it’s always best to consult your GP. Early detection makes treatment easier.
All You Need is Lungs is a joint initiative from ALK Positive Lung Cancer UK, EGFR+ UK, and the Ruth Strauss Foundation for Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
Thank you to all our incredible campaign volunteers.”
