James P. Crowley: Sidney Farber’s achievement of attaining the first clinical remission in childhood leukemia through chemotherapy

James P. Crowley, Professor of Medicine emeritus at Brown University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Dr. Sidney Farbers’s (Farber) remarkable achievement of attaining the first clinical remission in childhood leukemia through chemotherapy marked a significant milestone in the field .

He was widely recognized for his composed and confident demeanor, often described as grandfatherly and gentle, particularly in his interactions with children.

His peers deeply respected his understated yet occasionally wry sense of humor, tireless work ethic, and exceptional ability to adapt to diverse circumstances.

Farber exuded an air of authority, being acknowledged for his impeccable attire and commanding presence. He ardently advocated for sustained research, adequate funding, and national dedication as fundamental prerequisites for defeating cancer.

Despite this, his monumental contributions to pediatric pathology and oncology have received relatively lesser recognition than he deserved. This review article stands as a tribute to Farber’s extraordinary influence on the lives of millions through his trailblazing research.”
