Big Changes at IKCC: Welcoming New Leaders to Guide the Future

Leadership transitions can signal more than just change—they can mark the beginning of a new era. For the International Kidney Cancer Coalition (IKCC), this moment is one of both gratitude and excitement as the organization welcomes three inspiring figures into new leadership roles.

Their stories are woven into the very fabric of IKCC’s mission, each bringing a unique blend of passion, experience, and vision to shape the next chapter of global kidney cancer advocacy.

A New Chapter Begins: Dr. Eric Jonasch Named Chair-Elect

For nearly a decade, Dr. Eric Jonasch has been a guiding force within the IKCC. Now, beginning 1 April 2025, he will take on a new role as Chair-Elect of the Board of Directors, before officially becoming Chair on 1 November.

Eric follows in the footsteps of Dr. Michael Jewett, a pillar of IKCC leadership who will become Immediate Past Chair. As a renowned U.S. medical oncologist with over 20 years of experience treating kidney cancer and von Hippel-Lindau disease, Eric has brought both clinical expertise and a deep understanding of patient needs to his work.

As the current Chair of IKCC’s Medical Advisory Board (MAB), he has expanded the organization’s global influence and championed physician involvement in patient-centered advocacy. Now, as Chair, Eric is poised to build on this legacy with vision and compassion.

A Global Perspective: Prof. Stênio de Cássio Zequi to Lead the Medical Advisory Board

From São Paulo, Brazil, Prof. Stênio Zequi has long been a passionate voice for patients across Latin America. On 1 April 2025, he will step into Eric Jonasch’s shoes as the new Chair of the Medical Advisory Board.

Stênio joined the MAB in 2019 and became part of its executive team in 2023. A prominent figure in urologic oncology, he’s deeply committed to integrating healthcare professionals into the patient journey. As founder of the Latin America Renal Cancer Group (LARCG), he has worked tirelessly to bring regional insights to global conversations.

His leadership is grounded in equity, collaboration, and a determination to amplify patient voices from every corner of the world.

Compassion and Advocacy: Claudia Ungarelli Named Vice-Chair

Advocacy takes on new depth when it’s rooted in lived experience. Claudia Ungarelli of Italy, who joined the IKCC Board in 2023, brings both professional expertise and a personal connection to kidney cancer. Beginning 1 April 2025, she will serve as Vice-Chair-Elect, and officially step into the Vice-Chair role on 1 November.

As a caregiver to both her father and grandfather during their kidney cancer journeys, Claudia understands the profound impact the disease has on families. Her advocacy is driven by empathy, experience, and a relentless pursuit of better outcomes for patients and caregivers alike.

IKCC also extends heartfelt thanks to Bryan Lewis, whose tenure as Vice-Chair since 2020 has been marked by steadfast commitment and leadership. His contributions have left a lasting imprint on the organization.

IKCC

A Future Guided by Passion, Diversity, and Experience

With Eric, Stênio, and Claudia taking on these vital roles, the IKCC is not just moving forward—it’s moving forward with strength, clarity, and renewed purpose. These leaders bring diverse perspectives, united by a shared goal: improving the lives of people affected by kidney cancer around the world.

Please join us in celebrating their appointments—and stay connected as IKCC continues to grow, evolve, and stand with the global kidney cancer community.
