The ICR Discovers New Role of PERK Enzyme in Metastatic Cancer Spread

The Institute of Cancer Research – ICR shared on LinkedIn:

“New Discovery
The newly discovered role of an enzyme in determining the physical structure and behaviour of cancer cells has opened the door to new approaches to stopping cancer from spreading.
The enzyme, called PERK, helps coordinate the response pathway that cells use to adapt to a range of stressors. When PERK does not function correctly, cells are unable to respond sufficiently to stress, and this can contribute to metabolic conditions such as diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. It can also lead to metastatic cancer, which is often difficult to treat.
Therapeutic strategies that target PERK or other molecules involved in the pathway therefore have the potential to benefit an extremely broad patient population.
Lead author Professor Chris Bakal, Group Leader of the Dynamical Cell Systems Group at the ICR, said:
‘We are pleased to have uncovered a completely new role for PERK in coordinating the stress response with cell shape. Our findings also present new opportunities to stop the shape changes that drive metastatic cancer.’
