Harold Jack West: The Role of Social Media in Oncology Meetings
Harold Jack West, Thoracic oncology specialist serving as Vice President of Clinical Development (Lung Cancer) for Summit Therapeutics, shared a post by Nina Niu Sanford, Chief of Gastrointestinal Radiation Oncology Service in Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, on X, adding:
“As shown in my ASCO24 tweet below, my experience has not been as gratifying as yours, though I’ll say that you personally are a bright light of thoughtful commentary. I find ASCO is also the time when SoMe dabblers are most likely to use Twitter for heavy-handed self-promotion.
And I think seeing actual data about Twitter/X use around ASCO is especially helpful vs our own selected and biased personal impressions, like the benefit of a large retrospective study vs a couple of case reports.”
Quoting Nina Niu Sanford’s post:
“People should post what they want, anyone is free to mute or unfollow… FWIW I feel like info sharing/critique has improved at recent oncology meetings. If the tradeoff is scrolling through a few more selfies, I’m ok with that.”
