“The Real Cost of Drug Discovery: What Decision-Makers in Our Region Need to Know
Our region often has enthusiasm about investing in drug discovery as a pillar of innovation. But are we fully aware of the financial and structural prerequisites needed to succeed?
A recent study highlights that the median cost of developing a new drug is $708 million, while ultra-costly medications drive the mean to a staggering $1.3 billion. These numbers aren’t just financial barriers, they reflect the immense R&D efforts, infrastructure, and talent pipeline required to bring a single drug to market.

For our region, this raises important questions:
Do we have the foundational research ecosystem to support such high-stakes investment?
Should we first focus on developing clinical research capacity or other areas of pharmaceutical innovation before jumping into drug discovery?
How can AI and emerging technologies help us bridge the gap efficiently and affordably?
Let’s align our aspirations with realistic strategies and ensure our investments build long-term, sustainable impact in healthcare innovation.
What are your thoughts on the path forward for drug discovery in our region?”
