Using Geriatric Assessment as a Foundation for Treatment Decisions – SIOG
SIOG – International Society of Geriatric Oncology shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The management of Breast Cancer in older adults is evolving – and so are the recommendations guiding it.
In 2023, SIOG and the European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists (EUSOMA) jointly updated their landmark 2012 guidelines to reflect new evidence and treatment strategies tailored for older patients.
The updated recommendations emphasize:
Using Geriatric Assessment – not age alone – as a foundation for treatment decisions
Integrating patient preferences, life expectancy, and competing risks into care planning
Addressing newer areas like:
- Chemotherapy toxicity prediction tools
- Genetic screening and gene expression profiles
- Neoadjuvant options, bone-modifying agents and targeted therapies
- Social, cultural, and supportive care considerations
This comprehensive update supports clinicians in making more individualized, equitable, and evidence-informed decisions for older patients with breast cancer.
Check this and all SIOG Guidelines here.”
