ESMO 2024 Research Fellowship awardees

“ESMO is pleased to announce the 2024 Research Fellowship awardees: Luca Arecco, Federica Giugliano, Ashray Gunjur, Daniël Lionarons, and Caterina Vaghi.

The ESMO Research Fellowship programme provides Young Oncologists opportunities and support to develop high-quality research projects in either Clinical Research or Translational Research.

The awardees will be recognised during the Young Oncologists Fellowship session on Monday, 16 September, 12.00-13.30 CEST, HALL 7, Tarragona Auditorium at ESMO24.”

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) represents over 35,000 oncology professionals across 172 countries and is a key resource for oncology education and information. ESMO’s primary mission is to enhance the quality of cancer care, spanning prevention, diagnosis, palliative care, and patient follow-up.

It focuses on educating doctors, cancer patients, and the general public about best practices and the latest advancements in oncology, and advocates for equal access to optimal cancer care for all patients.

Luca Arecco is a Research Fellow at the Jules Bordet Institute and a Medical Oncology Resident at Ospedale Policlinic San Martino. His work centeres on breast cancer research, with a particular emphasis on treating young women with the disease.

Federica Giugliano is currently a Research Fellow at the Gustave Roussy Institute in France. Her work focuses on advancing cancer research. In addition to her role at Gustave Roussy, she is also a Medical Oncology Resident at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) in Milan, Italy, where she is involved in clinical training and research.

Ashray Gunjur is a Medical Oncology Research Fellow at Austin Health, focusing on oncology and public and global health. He is currently pursuing a clinical PhD that examines the relationship between the gut microbiome and the effectiveness and toxicity of immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with rare cancers.

Daniël Lionarons is a Resident in Medical Oncology at Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. Previously, he was a Resident in Internal Medicine (AIOS) at the AMC – Academic Medical Center. He specializes in both internal medicine and oncology, focusing on cancer treatment and research.

Paolo Tarantino, MD, is pursuing an advanced research fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, concurrently working towards a PhD in clinical research at the University of Milan.

His research focuses on exploring the HER2 oncoprotein, investigating the emerging HER2-low subgroup of breast tumors, and developing novel antibody-drug conjugates targeting every subtype of breast cancer. With a publication record exceeding 50 papers on breast cancer, he is recognized as a leading expert in the field.
