Elizabeth Ugwoma Awo-Ejeh: I Didn’t Choose Cancer, But I Chose to Fight

Elizabeth Ugwoma Awo-Ejeh, Breast Cancer Survivor and Advocate, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“June is National Cancer survivor Month
I didn’t choose cancer. But I chose to fight.
And today, on National Cancer Survivors Day, I celebrate more than survival — I celebrate becoming.
I became the girl who stood in front of a mirror, bald and scared, and still said, ‘I’m beautiful.’
I became the woman who heard the words “you have cancer” and decided they would not be the end of my story.
I became the voice for others who are still too afraid to speak.
Survivorship is not about being free of pain.
It’s about choosing life, even when it hurts.
Choosing hope, even when everything looks uncertain.
Choosing to rise, every single time life tries to knock you down.
Whether you’re in treatment, post-treatment, or just learning how to breathe again after the storm —
You are a survivor.
Not because it’s easy. But because you’re still here.
  • Your scars are proof that healing is happening.
  • Your tears are not weakness — they’re strength in liquid form.
  • Your life matters. Your story matters. You matter.
So today, I don’t just celebrate the fight I survived.
I celebrate the fire it lit inside me.
To anyone out there still fighting — I see you. I honor you. And I walk this road with you.”
