Dégi László Csaba: Empathy is The Heartbeat of Oncology
Dégi László Csaba, Full Professor at UBB, ECO President, IPOS Secretary, Ombudsman, APSCO President, and FSAS Ph.D. Director, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I had the honor of delivering the keynote speech at the Young Cancer Professionals Roundtable hosted by the International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS) and the European Cancer Organisation (ECO).
The theme? ‘EMPATHY IN CANCER TREATMENT AND COMPASSION FATIGUE’ – a topic that resonates deeply with anyone who has witnessed the emotional weight of cancer care, whether as a patient, caregiver, or healthcare professional.
Empathy is the heartbeat of oncology. It’s the quiet hand-holding during a tough diagnosis, the listening ear for a patient’s fears, and the courage to meet someone in their most vulnerable moments. But let’s be real- empathy comes at a cost.
Compassion fatigue sneaks up on us, draining the well of care we draw from daily. As young professionals, we’re often told to ‘tough it out,’ but that’s not sustainable. We need to talk about it – openly, honestly, and without judgment.
Here’s the truth: we can’t pour from an empty cup. To deliver empathetic care, we must prioritize our mental health—through peer support, mindfulness, or simply giving ourselves permission to rest.
The roundtable sparked powerful discussions on practical tools: from IPOS’s training modules on psycho-oncology to ECO’s advocacy for workplace wellness programs.
These aren’t just buzzwords – they’re lifelines.
Thank you to IPOS and ECO for amplifying young voices in cancer care. Together, we’re building a future where empathy thrives, and no one – patient or professional – faces the journey alone.”
