Catharina Boehme: A Powerful Reminder of What Global Collaboration can Achieve, Even in Uncertain Times
Catharina Boehme, Assistant Director of General External Relations at the World Health Organization, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It’s been an incredibly productive World Health Assembly so far—and a powerful reminder of what global collaboration can achieve, even in uncertain times.
A few standout moments from this WHA78:
Adoption of the WHO Pandemic Agreement to enhance global preparedness and response to future pandemics, and a landmark for global health security. The agreement will enter into force once at least 60 countries ratify it, following the finalization of the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) annex.
Historic 20% increase in member state contributions and over US$210M new voluntary contributions toward sustainable financing;
Recognition of countries and individuals who have achieved major public health milestones and set examples for others — such as the elimination of malaria;
Introduction of electronic voting much reduced the time spent on geopolitical matters and allowed for rapid progress with resolutions and decisions to strengthen health systems, access to care and life saving innovation.
Powerful dialogues, vibrant side events, and perhaps most helpful, the bilateral engagements…
All this in just six days. Immense respect and thanks to the dedicated teams working behind the scenes. And to the United Nations Office at Geneva Palais peacocks who help keep us zen…
The Assembly continues until Tuesday—so more to come.”
