Carmen Monge-Montero, Researcher and Patient Advocate at Youth Cancer Europe, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Hi Network,

Back on World Workers’ Day, I shared some reflections on the invisible struggles many people with a lived cancer experience face when it comes to work and education.

After that post, many cancer fellows reached out to share how this resonated with them, confirming something we don’t talk about enough: disparities in education, employment, and financial wellbeing after cancer are real, especially for young people.

In fact, a study of AYA cancer survivors in the Netherlands found they were significantly less likely to be employed both 1 and 5 years post-diagnosis compared to peers (Janssen, SHM., et al 2022), and another study showed survivors are more likely to be unemployed or underemployed compared to their peers, highlighting the need for long-term support and policy change (Dankers, P. W., et al. 2024).

So I’ve created a new video, where I open up more fully about my personal experiences trying to rebuild a career after cancer. I talk about:

– Facing stigma when applying for jobs
– Dealing with late effects like fatigue and chemo brain
– Getting fired after sharing I had cancer
– 40+ PhD rejections, and the doubt that comes with them (still a dream!)
– Why I stopped disclosing my cancer history in applications
– And why I still believe cancer survivors bring unique value to the workplace
