Carmen Monge-Montero Reflected on Cancer Survivor Day 2025
Carmen Monge-Montero, Researcher and patient advocate at Youth Cancer Europe, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today is Cancer Survivor Day or as I prefer to call it, People with a Lived Cancer Experience Day.
When I think about this day, I don’t think about my own story first. I think about the community, the incredible people I’ve met over the last 12 years around the world, and that I call my friends.
There are so many words to describe them, and they inspire me every day to keep pushing for change, for us.
No one understands us like someone who has lived it. And we know what’s best for ourselves — that’s why patient advocacy matters so deeply to me.
I could talk for hours about this. But instead, I want you to hear it directly from others with a lived cancer experience, people I’ve interviewed through my project Mano.
One of my favorite questions I ask during interviews is:
“Do you know many cancer survivors – and if you had to describe them in one word, what would it be?”
Here are their answers.”
