Atrium Health: A big day for cancer patients in the Carolinas and beyond
Atrium Health Levine Cancer has officially commenced patient treatments with proton beam therapy, marking a significant advancement in cancer care for the region. Located at the newly established Atrium Health Levine Cancer Proton & Advanced Radiation Center in midtown Charlotte, this facility is the first and only one in the Carolinas to offer this innovative therapy. Proton beam therapy is a highly precise form of radiation treatment that targets tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue, making it an ideal option for both adult and pediatric patients with complex tumors.
This groundbreaking service is part of a larger $69 million investment by Atrium Health aimed at enhancing cancer treatment options in Charlotte. The center features a state-of-the-art 110-ton cyclotron, which serves as the powerhouse for delivering proton therapy. With its advanced technology, the center not only aims to improve patient outcomes but also provides hope to families who previously had to travel long distances for such specialized care.
Atrium Health shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It’s a BIG day for cancer patients in the Carolinas and beyond. Today, we started proton beam therapy at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Proton & Advanced Radiation Center! We are the first and only program in the Carolinas to offer this state-of-the-art treatment and one of less than 50 centers nationwide.
Proton therapy is a highly precise form of radiation that targets cancerous cells, with minimal, if any, impact to surrounding, healthy cells. This helps reduce the risk of long-term complications and secondary malignancies, which makes it perfect for children, young adults and those with cancers in sensitive areas.
Dakota and Hunter are our first two patients to receive this treatment, and we’re honored that they trust us to care for them!
