Asia’s Growing Share of the Global Cancer Burden – UICC
Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Asia bears a significant share of the global cancer burden — nearly 60% of the world’s population lives in the region.
A new The Lancet Group review of National Cancer Control Plans (NCCPs) in 21 countries represented in the Asian National Cancer Centers Alliance, which includes many UICC member organisations, found:
- A wide variation in plan status — from comprehensive NCCPs to no cancer-specific plans
- Air pollution, a growing cancer risk in the region, addressed in 43% of plans
- End-of-life care included in 48% of plans
- Legal frameworks and evaluation mechanisms in 57%
While most plans cover prevention, treatment, and stakeholder engagement, gaps remain in supportive and palliative care, governance, and addressing environmental risks.
Locally adapted, comprehensive strategies — spanning prevention to survivorship, backed by strong legal and financial structures — are critical for equitable cancer control.
Find out more about NCCPs.”
