Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: Encouraged by the American Cancer Society’s Expansion into Africa
Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026 and a Founder of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The American Cancer Society (ACS), a leading force in global cancer control and a valued member of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) paid a courtesy visit to us at Medicaid Cancer Foundation to explore possible areas of collaboration.
During this visit, my team shared the impact of our PACE (Patient Access to Cancer care Evolution) program and our ongoing efforts to support people living with cancer in Nigeria. I had the opportunity to personally introduce our new telemedicine platform in collaboration with Mobihealth International, which is already live and helping cancer patients with timely health support from the comfort of their homes.
The team introduced the American Cancer Society ACS’s BEACON Toolkit, and their new SPARK program, which focuses on patient navigation across Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda. Another highlight was their patient education materials, where they expressed willingness to include context-specific, locally driven content from organizations like ours, ensuring greater relevance and community reach.
It was a pleasure to host Kristie McComb, Erica Krisel and Jenna D. from the American Cancer Society Global Patient Support team, alongside Dr. Uchechukwu Emmanuel Nwokwu from the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and a representative of the American Cancer Society Nigeria, Pharmacist Akanbi Rafiu.
American Cancer Society is a long-standing partner of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). As president-elect, I am encouraged by their expansion into Africa and look forward to growing the partnership and the shared vision of advancing equitable, patient-centered cancer care.”
