Tanya Buchanan: This is legislation that simplifies, modernizes, and helps future-proof tobacco control in Australia in order to reduce smoking prevalence.
Tanya Buchanan, Chief Executive Officer at Cancer Council Australia, recently shared on LinkedIn:
“Today the Federal Government and Health Minister Mark Butler took another critical step towards addressing nicotine addiction and reducing the harmful effects of tobacco with the new Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) Bill.
Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable cancers, and more than 250,000 Australians are predicted to die of smoking-related cancers alone over the next 20 years.
This is legislation that simplifies, modernizes, and helps future-proof tobacco control in Australia in order to reduce smoking prevalence. It also reclaims Australia’s position as a world leader in tobacco control.
Thank you for all your work, Minister. We look forward to seeing the legislation progress in Parliament so that together, we can improve health outcomes for Australians and stop a new generation from being addicted to nicotine and tobacco.”
